Are you a #dogmom turned human mom? If so, you know how crazy life gets once your little one arrives. Early mornings and up-all-nighters can disrupt anyone's routine - even your dogs. If you aren't quite there yet, don't fret!
Life for you, and your fury family members, will be changing soon and many things will need to be addressed. But that doesn't mean this transition will be bumpy - with these tips (and a whole lotta patience) you will all be comfortable in no time.
Here are 4 things to do (or think about) before bringing home your new baby to meet your dogs.
1. Where will the dog, and baby, be sleeping? If your dogs sleep in the same room as you, you might want to introduce them to another cozy area for them to snooze in your home. When you first bring your newborn home, they will be waking frequently and making lots of (loud) noises your dogs may be uncomfortable with. Try setting up your dogs bed in the living room, or outside your door, so they have a comfortable place to go to relax if needed.
Insider tip: My dogs got used to the late night/early morning wakings within a few weeks. Some take longer than others, but just let them know that everything is okay and don't force them away if they want to "help."
2. Have you introduced your dogs to the nursery? As soon as you get your baby's room ready, it's a good idea to get your pups in there as much as possible. They will be able to see the new baby gadgets up close and personal and have plenty of time to adjust to the new norm of having toys, diapers, and you name it thrown across the floor.
Insider tip: Once your baby is old enough for floor play, invite your dogs to come play with their toys too so they will feel included and get some pent up energy out.
3. Make sure to have a PLAN. This refers to a number of things, such as, taking turns taking care of the dogs while the other tends to the baby, who takes the dogs on a walks/out to play each day, who will make sure the dogs are getting enough love and attention (I know - you may be thinking how will I forget that?! You won't necessarily forget, but life will get in the way and that's why I recommend a plan!)
4. Embrace It: Forget what I just said in tip #3 because nothing EVER happens like you plan it. The word "plan" should have NO meaning to you whatsoever. And that's okay. Although it can be hard for some, try to take life as it comes. The best you can do is learn how to take life as it comes and do what's best for you and your family!
Insider tip: None of this will be easy for any new parent, but with your dog(s) by your side you will be able to get through anything!
